What’s the Difference Between the Testers?

Testing a Battery with a Carbon Pile Load Tester

One of the most important things to pay attention to when someone uses a conductance tester on your battery is whether the correct battery rating has been entered.

If someone enters a higher rating than the battery is actually designed to provide, the battery could be judged against a standard it was never intended to meet. That could potentially result in a "bad battery" reading even when the battery is performing appropriately for its actual specifications.

Does a Weak Battery Always Mean You Need to Replace It?

A battery test is an important tool for determining battery health, but the results should be considered alongside the battery's age, condition, vehicle requirements, and starting performance.

In Scott's example, the vehicle was still starting without any problems, but both testing methods indicated that the battery was no longer performing at its rated level.

That means waiting until the battery completely fails isn't necessarily the best approach. Testing can give you an opportunity to identify a weakening battery before you're unexpectedly stuck with a vehicle that won't start.
