In this tutorial, we walk you through how to replace a larger booster cable clamp and share tips to help you get a secure, long-lasting connection.
Why Replace a Worn Booster Cable Clamp?

The Most Important Tip Before You Start
When replacing a clamp where the cable runs through the handle and attaches behind the jaw, remember: Feed the cable through the clamp before attaching the jaw.
If you attach the jaw first, you’ll have to remove it and start over because the cable needs to pull back through the clamp during assembly.
How to Replace the Clamp
1. Remove the Old Clamp
Start by removing the jaw from the replacement clamp assembly. This separates the jaw from the clamp body and gives you access to where the cable will be attached.
2. Feed the Cable Through the Clamp
Run the cable through the clamp before making any connections.
The clamp includes a strain relief area that will later grip the insulation and help prevent tension from pulling directly on the cable connection.
3. Prepare the Cable
Remove enough insulation from the end of the cable to expose the wire strands.
The exposed cable should fit into the clamp connection area and allow enough room to secure the cable and create the electrical connection.
4. Secure the Cable Connection
Push the cable strands into the clamp tabs and secure them before soldering. We recommend soldering the connection to ensure the cable is properly attached.
5. Add Strain Relief
After soldering, bend the strain relief tabs over the cable insulation.
The strain relief helps prevent pulling force from being transferred directly to the cable connection, helping protect the wire from internal damage.
6. Reassemble the Clamp
Pull the cable and attached jaw back into position inside the clamp. Tighten the jaw securely, then reinstall the spring and finish bending the tabs into place.
Once complete, you should have a secure new clamp ready for use.
